Using the Distance Service
Anyone who is enrolled in a Victoria University Distance course has access to the Distance Service. Postgraduates who live outside Wellington can also apply for access. Contact the Distance Service for more information.
Using the service, you can:
- Borrow books from the Library by post. (This service is not available to students outside New Zealand.) Make a Distance Request.
- Receive copies of journal articles and book chapters by email, subject to the limits of the Copyright Act
- Arrange interloans of material from other libraries.
- Get help registering for ULANZ reciprocal borrowing access at other University libraries around New Zealand.
You can also use your university username and password to access almost all our online resources from anywhere in the world.
You don't have to pay to use the Distance Service. All material sent to you will include a self-addressed, prepaid envelope for you to return it in.
The Library's postal address is:
Library (Collection Access)
Victoria University of Wellington
PO Box 3438 Wellington 6140
If you change your address, please change it via Student Records as soon as possible.
To borrow a book from the Library, make a Distance Request.
If you want to request an item the Library doesn't hold, use our Interloan Service
Items on two-hour loan may not be borrowed by Distance Students. However, you can submit a request for them and the Distance team will send you a copy of their table of contents, allowing you to select a chapter to be copied for you.
We try to act on requests within one working day of receipt. If an item you have requested has to be obtained from another campus library, there may be a slight delay.
3 Day Loan items may be borrowed; they are issued for 12 days, to allow for postage.
Issue periods and overdue material
Distance items are issued for 14 days to undergraduates, and 28 days to postgraduates. Items must be received by the Library on or before the indicated due date.
Fines for overdue material remain the same. You will be fined if material issued to you has not arrived at the Library by its indicated due date; it is not sufficient for it to be postmarked by the due date.
3 day loan and one-week loan books are issued for 12 days, and sent by FastPost.
Items that must be posted are sent by standard post, except three-day loan books, which are sent FastPost.
